International cooperation

The SHI is involved in international activities about hydrology and water resources in the frames of the UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) programmes. Such activities include the following areas:

• Intercomparison of instruments for the measurement of precipitation (with participation of the WMO)
• Generalization of data on experimental hydrology of small catchments.
• Compilation and publication of the results of work on forest hydrology.
• Study of water balances the northern small catchments.
• Participation in the international initiatives: Arctic-HYDRA (study of hydrological systems in the Arctic), GTOS (Global Terrestrial Observing System) and SWIPA (Climate Change and Cryosphere).

In accordance with the agreement between Roshydromet and WMO, concluded at the initiative of the State Hydrological Institute, SHI launched the International Data Centre on Hydrology of Lakes and Water Reservoirs (HYDROLARE). The Centre, along with other similar centres, is included in "Global Network of Hydrology".

The Institute is actively involved in the implementation of new international projects: Arctic Climate System Study, the creation of European Hydrological Data Archive, and the World Hydrological Cycle Observing System.
